Removal of nitrate using modified pumice as adsorbent for reducing groundwater pollution

Nitrate adsorption onto the physically and chemically modified pumice was investigated as an effort for reducing groundwater pollution. The treatments were heating at temperatures of 300°C, 450°C, 600°C physical soaking in acid solutions (HCl, H 2 SO 4 , HNO 3 ) chemical treatments. performed a batch system room temperature (25±1°C) with optimum condition (pH 4; 0.3 g/L adsorbent dose; <63 µm diameters 30 minutes contact time). results indicated that resulted increasing removal efficiency nitrate uptake compared to natural pumice. highest achieved from 300°C (62.04% 155.09 mg/g) solution (83.30% 208.25 mg/g), while by using only reached 57.02 % 142.55 mg/g. SEM images confirmed change surface morphology including pore structure area which can be proper sites pollutants. This study demonstrated modification could potential treatment increase pumice, thus solve problem
